College Courses List and Descriptions

Colleges offer a wide variety of courses, covering many different fields of study. Each college has it’s own College Courses List and Descriptions. These fields can include business, management, creative studies, sports coaching, secretarial studies, finance and bookkeeping, child care, events management, project management and computer studies.

There are different kinds of courses that are offered at college, and courses are offered on various levels. In South Africa, college courses could take the following forms:

Further Education and Training (FET) Certificate coursesNational Certificate coursesNational Diploma coursesShort coursesCourses accredited by professional bodies – these courses are frequently designed to prepare students for the professional body’s examinationsCourses developed by the college itself

Colleges in South Africa do not offer degree courses. If you would like to study towards a degree, you will need to study through a university.

Colleges can either specialise in a certain field of study, such as computer studies, or they can offer courses in a range of study areas.

Course names could differ from college to college, which means that you will have to look at the course descriptions when comparing courses across colleges.

Where can you find a list of College Courses?

Colleges all have their own College Courses List and Descriptions. You can find these by searching on the internet and visiting the college’s website, by reading college course brochures, and by contacting the college in person to request course information.

These courses cover a wide variety of aspects related to bookkeeping and accounting. Computer studies is a very broad field incorporating studies relating to both hardware and software. Management involves facilitating co-operation between various parties to make sure that things get done efficiently or taking the necessary steps to ensure that objectives are achieved as efficiently as possible. There are courses that cover various aspects of management, including Project Management, Financial Management, Business Management, Human Resource Management, Marketing Management and Events Management.

Human Resources Studies

Essentially, human resource management can be regarded as the science and art of managing people. In organisations, it involves aspects such as recruitment of staff, administering compensation and benefits, performance management, training, safety and wellness of staff, communication, employee motivation, and relevant administration. The purpose of human resource management is to ensure that staff are managed effectively and in a structured manner, and that development of staff takes place. Human resource managers are usually also responsible for making sure that labour laws and company employment policies are complied with.

Project Management Studies

Project management studies are aimed at teaching students how to manage different types and sizes of projects. Project management can be applied in most industries, which makes it a very useful skill to have.

Event Management Studies

Event management can be regarded as project management that is applied in the context of planning and managing events. Types of events include sports tournaments, concerts, festivals, weddings, fashion shows and conventions. Event management can be a very creative field of study. Event management studies cover the various aspects that are involved in the process of planning an event.

Beauty Therapy Studies

The work of a beauty therapist involves helping clients to look and feel better, which can help them to de-stress and improve their confidence. Beauty therapy studies focus on teaching students how to use the relevant techniques and how to administer the relevant therapies. The studies also focus on theoretical aspects such as anatomy and physiology. This allows students to gain a thorough and holistic understanding of beauty therapy. Beauty therapy skills can be used anywhere in the world. Courses in beauty therapy include courses in make-up artistry, lash and brow services, nail technology, hair removal, facial skin care and full body massage therapy.

Secretarial Studies

Qualifications in secretarial studies range from junior to executive level. Secretarial studies prepare students for work in an administrative environment. Secretaries and office administrators can be required to perform a wide range of administrative and office management tasks, depending on the size and nature of the organisation. Courses offered include Services SETA accredited FET certificate courses in management, supervisor courses, office administration courses, secretarial courses, professional secretary courses and executive secretary courses.

Decor and Design Studies

Décor and design studies incorporate both creative and technical elements. Décor, also referred to as interior decorating, focuses on the finishes in a room, such as the wallpaper, paint, curtains and furnishings. With interior decorating, the aim is to make a room look attractive and to make it functional and easy to use within the existing architecture. Interior design is more technical. It involves the planning and the implementation of the layout, as well as the decoration and furnishing, of an architectural interior. There is more focus on the structure of the interior. There are courses available in Interior Decorating and Design, Floristry and Digital Photography. There are also computer-related courses available in Flash, Dreamweaver, SharePoint and Photoshop.

Forensic Investigation Studies

The courses on offer include courses in Accident Scene Investigation, Investigating Fraudulent Documents, Criminal Justice, Cyber Crime Investigation, Private Investigation, Security Risk Management, Corporate Investigation, Trauma Support and Counselling, Forensic Biology, Crime Scene Reconstruction, General Investigation, Crime Scene Investigation, Disciplinary Investigation, Investigative Auditing, and Family Violence, Child Protection & Missing Persons. One of a forensic investigator’s roles is to provide impartial scientific evidence. Careers in this field often involve working closely with the justice system.

Creative Studies

Creative Studies cover a wide variety of courses for which creative thinking is required. Creative Studies courses include courses in Beauty Therapy, Child Day Care, Décor and Design, Event Management, Photography, Graphic Design, Radio and Sound Engineering, Web Design and Writing. Creative studies can be pursued for career purposes or as a hobby.

Wedding Planning Studies

Wedding planning studies cover all the aspects related to planning a wedding, including budgeting, how to deal with clients and suppliers, drafting contracts, and creative aspects such as décor and themes. How to manage a wedding planning or consulting business and how to build a client base is also dealt with.

Child Care Studies

Child care studies focus on teaching students how to look after children, how to facilitate their educational and physical development, and how to ensure the safety of children. Courses in child care studies cover topics such as Health, Safety and Nutrition for Young Children, Child Day Care, Creche Management, Introduction to Child Psychology, “Save-a-child” First Aid, Au Pair, Developmental Milestones, and Cooking for Infants and Young Children.
